The short version
- We learn what you like so your feed is better. You can see and erase all of it in Your Box.
- We never listen in the background. The mic only works while you're holding it on.
- We don't sell your personal information.
What we collect
Reading activity. Which stories you open, how long you spend on them, what you save, and what you mark as "less." Right now this is stored only in your browser. When accounts launch, signed-in readers' activity will be stored with their account so it follows them across devices.
What you tell us. When you type or say what you want to see, we save the text so we can tune your feed. Voice is turned into text by your browser or phone's built-in speech recognition, which may be processed by your browser or operating system provider. We receive the text, not a recording.
Your city. Only if you choose one. We don't use GPS.
Tea Talk posts. Other readers never see who posted. We keep minimal records linked to each post so we can stop abuse, enforce our rules, and respond to valid legal requests.
Tips and advertising inquiries. Whatever you put in those forms, sent only to our team.
Basic technical data. Like most sites: device type, browser, and approximate region from your IP address, used for security and to keep the site running.
Advertising
The Box News is free because of ads. Advertising partners may use cookies or similar technology to measure ads and show relevant ones. Where the law requires it, we'll ask for your consent first, and you'll be able to opt out of personalized ads.
Your controls
- See and remove interests, your city, and your history in Your Box.
- "Reset my box" erases everything we've learned about you.
- Clearing your browser's site data removes locally stored activity.
Kids
The Box News is not directed at children under 13, and we don't knowingly collect their personal information.
